Black Ops Cold War is a clunky name for an interesting setting. treyarch's previous COD, Black Ops 4, suffered from a lack of a campaign, so it's a good thing there is one this time. the COD campaign, in addition to providing hours of explosive entertainment for single-player players, provides the foundation for each game, helping to solidify their aesthetic and finalize their tone. Black Ops Cold War, the sequel to Black Ops 1, set in the early 80s, certainly does that.
This latest edition to the hugely popular first-person shooter series takes Call of Duty back to the conspiracy-laden Black Ops subseries. Set in 1981, players take control of "Bell," a custom character who assists CIA agents Russell Adler, Alex Mason, and Frank Woods in their attempt to stop a global nuclear threat brought on by a generic Russian villain named Perseus. Players will travel to different locations and shoot wave after wave of enemies. Players assume a custom character for the campaign, codenamed "Bell," and can choose their intelligence agency, skin color, nationality, and gender; as well as different personality traits that provide in-game benefits. And it turns out you’re quite the enigma.
CAMPAIGN
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War campaign is a far cry from the reality and self-serious story of modern warfare. The game takes full advantage of the 1980s setting, offering a kinetic campaign full of explosions, car chases, and slow-motion gun battles. At first glance, it seems a bit over the top, but after the first few missions, it's hard not to get caught up in the explosive excitement. It's a solid, exciting campaign with some interesting twists, a psychedelic ending, and some cool puzzles waiting to be solved.
The campaign isn't too long, but you may need to perform certain tasks multiple times to collect evidence that goes towards a pair of puzzles that need to be completed to complete the side quests in the right way. Suffice it to say that I really enjoyed solving these and adding them to the campaign to make it better. These aren't just the simple puzzles you might find in a Myst games either. They really make you think.
Player choice is in full swing again, and while you're only presented with small choices throughout the campaign, the final hours of the story significantly increase the choices and allow you to completely change the ending of the game. the final part of Black Ops Cold War is Black Ops at its best, completely subverting the narrative and allowing you to take an active role in how things play out. On paper, it's not the most memorable campaign, but the ending of the Black Ops Cold War is easily one of the best in the series.
MULTIPLAYER
It's a staple of the series, and that's why most of you are here. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War's multiplayer is in stark contrast to Modern Warfare's, which will certainly divide the player base even further than it already does. Modern Warfare's multiplayer is slower but more tactical than the traditional series, while Black Ops Cold War is the opposite. Multiplayer features new and returning game modes, as well as maps that accommodate the traditional 6v6 format and larger 12v12 battles. The game also introduces a new game mode called "Fireteam" that supports up to 40 players.
Modern Warfare's Create-a-Class system returns with two main differences: Field upgrades are implemented as part of class loading, and each class has four possible wildcard options: Gunner, Perk Greed, Danger Close (dual grenade devices), or Lawbreaker (allowing any weapon/perk type to be mixed and matched in any slot ). Like Modern Warfare, Cold War also supports cross-platform play and cross-platform processes. The update allows the multiplayer progression system to be integrated with Call of Duty: Warzone, allowing for a unified level system across Cold War, Warzone, and Modern Warfare. In addition, Cold War cadre characters and weapons have been added to Warzone for use with Modern Warfare cadres and weapons, although multiplayer modes remain separate and do not share cadres and weapons.
ZOMBIES
Surprisingly, it feels like all the best new ideas and creative energy from Black Ops Cold War have made their way into zombie mode. It makes sense: Zombies are now more of an iconic pillar of the Black Ops brand than any campaign character or storyline. The mode is fast-paced, fun, and full of secrets to uncover and puzzles to solve. Zombies feature a new storyline called "Dark Aether" that expands on the original Aether story that ended in Black Ops 4 while staying true to the main narrative of the campaign. Instead of playing a predefined role, players can take on the role of a commander in multiplayer as part of a CIA response team code-named "Requiem.
The multiplayer progression is shared with Zombies, as players can start Zombies matches with any weapon, as well as Gunsmith, continuous scoring and field upgrades, and returning mechanics such as well buys, Mystery Box, Pack-a-Punch, and fan-favorite perks from the past. For the first time in zombies, players can choose the "exfil" map, which puts them in a difficult wave with an increased number of enemies that they must survive before they can escape. Playable maps are also scattered around with intel that can be gathered, allowing players to follow and unfold the main story as they proceed.
VERDICT
Overall, Black Ops Cold War is a great shooter and a remarkable achievement. The campaign is exaggerated and exciting, the multiplayer is fast and furious, and the zombies remind me of the classic days of Kino Der Toten and Five. If you're a fan of Black Ops games, I think you'll really enjoy this one.
