This game was created on 20 November 2014 by Hipster Whale. With over 200 million players across all devices and excellent reviews on the app stores, Crossy roads look’s like a good game, so I decided to give it a try. Of all the silly little games I've played in the last month, I keep coming back to Crossy Road. It is fascinating for me, its animation, sound effects, and gameplay are all addictive! The gameplay is very simple, your job is to cross various roads, rivers, or rails until the end (that does not exist as it is an endless game). Every time you move forward, a counter will track how far you get, and on your way, you can collect some golden coins.
Not only do you get an excellent gameplay experience, the design and colors inside the game also look freaking good. The blocky style gives the game a unique style and makes it very charming, only by looking at it. Sound effects are also on point, so the gameplay gets even better. For example, every time a train will arrive, you can hear a ding-ding sound, and the traffic lights show red. Sometimes, you can also hear music that comes from a passing car. Crossy Road's environment is ever-shifting, featuring an array of cars, logs, trees, trains, wildlife, and the occasional elusive coin.
What's more interesting is that you can play more than 89 different characters. These characters may be bears, phone booths, Nessy, or some game developers. The characters do more than just exist as costumes like the Mad Wizard will blow up trees, and some characters make the gameplay at night. These characters can be bought for $0.99 each or earned randomly in a lottery system, where 100 coins will unlock a new character, with coins earnable through gameplay, video ads, and a regular gift.
Among endless games, Crossy Roads is one of my favorites. It has a unique style and simple mechanism, and there are many things to explore. I highly recommend you to play! As this game is entirely free to play, the developers have to make their money elsewhere. So the game will contain ads and in-app purchases, but these are not mandatory. The game implements opt-in video ads that players can watch to earn free coins if they choose. Watching video ads is voluntary if players want to speed up the rate they earn coins to win new characters. And the aspects to spend money on are 100% optional, you can spend the entire game just playing as the starting character and get the same caliber of experience as someone who bought every single character outright.
