I am a huge fan of SpongeBob, I grow up in the cartoon, so I can't refuse SpongeBob: Krusty Cook-Off. It's so fun to play SpongeBob and run a restaurant on the seafloor with familiar friends Mr. Krabs, Squidward, Sandy, and Patrick! Boot up Krusty Cook-off for the first time and you get a similar feeling. The music is reminiscent of your childhood, and visually it looks exactly like, if not even better than, the cartoon of your youth. The various scenes of Beechburg that we are familiar with have also been perfectly put into the game. To enhance the fun of the game, you can also collect and dress up various characters that appear in the game, such as putting on a chef for SpongeBob SquarePants Clothes, or the dress of a private soldier, or even the costume of a detective!
SpongeBob: Krusty Cook-Off’s gameplay is to combine simulation management and time management and present them in the form of levels. Your goal is to serve meals to hungry customers. You stand behind the counter, taking orders and preparing food. Once it’s cooked and good to go, you dish it out to the customer who pays you and leaves. In addition, you need to ensure that no customers leave, do not burn food, or serve a certain number of customers. Once you’ve served up enough customers, and completed a level’s objectives, you receive your earnings and move on. You can spend those earnings on a bunch of different restaurant upgrades. You can purchase new ingredients, which increases your income, and your appliances, which increases your efficiency by either speeding up cooking times or allowing you to cook more at once. You can also purchase interior decorations and furniture, which increases the amount that customers tip.
The most challenging part of the game is to satisfy customers and make them pay high prices. Considering how impatient marine life is obviously, this is no easy task. Once they have ordered a dish, a green bar will start ticking slowly, turning yellow and then red, which signifies the level of patience. Let this drop down to the bottom, and the customer will leave in disgust. So you have to do a good job of time management while cooking, things gain a little more depth with increasingly complicated orders, such as a customer asking for a burger with lettuce or Patrick taking forever to decide on what he wants to order. Prioritization is key here, as you have limited space on the grill and prep table and can only fit in so many orders at once. It’s not easy to clear the level.
Gems are premium currencies in the game, you can buy them directly, or you can get a few numbers for free by completing achievements and opening treasure chests. You can often get treasure chests by playing, and we haven’t had to purchase additional gems to buy restaurant upgrades so far. You can spend gems on new cosmetics through the gashapon system. This allows you to dress up the playable characters SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward in a variety of different outfits. Of course, if you are willing to wait patiently, you can get an item for free once a day.
In general, SpongeBob: Krusty Cook-Off is based on the well-known IP SpongeBob. Its graphics are first-rate, looking even better than the actual cartoon series we remember as a kid.
